Red Buckeye Tree

Description
In spring, showy red, 9-in. panicles bloom, attracting hummingbirds. One of the few small trees that will flower in dense shade. Grows 10- to 20-ft. tall with round to pyramidal shape. Works well as tree or shrub. Resists disease and pests. Plant in full sun to shade. Zones 4-9.

  • Foliage3 to 6 inch opposite, palmately compound leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets; dark green leaves with no appreciable Fall color; looses leaves early Fall. Foliiage appreciates some afternoon shade in hot Summer climates.
  • Flower FormShowy, erect 4 - 10 inch long panicles of flowers cover this small tree during the Spring months. It will produce ample flowers when it reaches only two to three years of age.

  • FruitSmooth, light brown, globular (1 - 2 inch diameter) seed capsules encase 1 - 3 shiny seeds called buckeyes that ripen in the Fall. Seeds are poisonous and are avoided by most wildlife.
  • Soil RequirementsWell-drained, humus enriched soil.
  • Growth RateModerate growth rate (13 - 24 inches per year).
  • PruningLower branches can be removed to allow for clearance beneath the crown, but the tree looks its best planted in the open to allow branches to fully develop to the ground.
  • CommentsFlowers are attractive to Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and bloom in St. Louis at about the same time that the hummingbirds return to the area in Spring migration. They are very showy when in flower. The coarse, open structure and the light brown, flaky bark is quite attractive and offers great Winter landscape interest.
